Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural site in 2003, Cuenca is a charming city in the Southern Ecuadorian Andes, revealing Ecuador 's colonial past. Take a Cuenca city tour around the pretty plazas and 19th century churches which are surrounded by the imposing Republican architecture. Photo opportunities abound!
The flower market makes for an interesting stop - eat delicious traditional roast pig with the locals at the 10 de Agosto Market, where Cuencans shop for their food. Cuenca tours are a favourite stop on any tour because there is plenty to do for everyone in the surrounds. Trips can be made to the Cajas National park to be overwhelmed by the breathtaking scenery. Enjoy a day or so hiking. Alternatively, history buffs can head to Ingapirca, the largest and most important Inca-Cañari complex in Ecuador.
Shopaholics and those fond of culture can head to Gualaceo and Chordeleg to shop for fruit, jewelry and ceramics, and stop off on the way to observe the Ikat form of weaving, a tradition that is fast dying out.
